LITTLE ROCK (Talk Business) - A new poll from Talk Business and Hendrix College shows 60 percent of Arkansas voters support a bill in the state legislature that would ban most abortions at 12 weeks.
SB 134, the "Heartbeat Protection Act," sponsored by Sen. Jason Rapert (R-Conway), would require any woman wanting an abortion to first undergo an abdominal ultrasound. If a heartbeat was detected, the abortion would then be illegal except for cases of rape, incest, medical emergencies or to save the life of the mother.
One-third of respondents said they were opposed to the bill. Seven percent said they didn't know how they felt about the bill.
"We're right around the midway point of the legislative session and we wanted to test some of the issues being hotly debated as well as get a gauge for what Arkansans think of their current political leadership," said Talk Business executive editor Roby Brock. "These results we'll be rolling out provide some fascinating insight into voter attitudes. I suspect elected officials will find the results useful in making some of their political and policy decisions."
