Al Gore rips Keystone pipeline while in Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) – Al Gore targeted the Keystone XL pipeline project and special interest influence during a passionate speech at the Clinton Presidential Center Monday night.

"It's gotten to the point where no reform, no significant reform, can possibly be passed in the Congress unless they first endeavor to get permission from the special interests that are more affected by it," said the former vice president.

Gore spoke as part of the Kumpuris Lecture Series in front of hundreds of Arkansas supporters.

The crowd relished the chance to applaud Gore's criticism of special interest influence.

"We need to change this," he said. "We need to make it impossible for billionaires to make anonymous donations. They need to disclose their names and their contributions so we know what they're trying to get done."

According to Congressman Tim Griffin, 500 miles of pipe for the proposed Keystone XL pipeline sits at a Welspun facility in Little Rock.

The pipeline would transport tar sands oil from Canada to refineries near the Gulf of Mexico but its potential energy-consuming methods have drawn the ire of climate change activists.

On Monday, Gore warned lawmakers to not give into what he calls "the dirtiest source of energy you could imagine."

"Junkies find veins in their toes when ones in their arms and legs give out," said Gore. "It's easy to produce oil so we're going to this tar sands junk. We need to get off this."
