Easy ways to DE-STRESS

Posted: Updated:

Do you have stress in your life? Almost everyone does.

Experts say the biggest problem when it comes to stress is lack of deep breaths. When muscles lack oxygen they tighten up. So take a deep breath, wherever you are, right now. Feel better?

For new mom, Sara Norwood, a massage at Ava Bella Day Spa is the best way for her to relieve some stress.

"I think where I notice it the most is in my shoulders and my neck and that type of area," said Norwood. "I think from the stress and also from the physical part of holding the baby especially at this age, he's reaching for everything. Really can't get him to sit still at all."

Norwood says she'll get a massage about once a month even its squeezed in during a lunch break because taking care of herself helps her take care of others. As the old saying goes "if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."

"I can definitely tell a difference," said Norwood. "I feel a little bit more worn down. My body as a whole feels a lot tighter to me whenever I miss my appointment."

But if your schedule or budget doesn't allow for help from a professional there are things you can do to help.

"The end of the day is the most important time to unwind because some people just go to work, they come home, they cook or deal with their children and they go right to bed and they don't give themselves the chance to really let go. And that's really important to have some time in the evening and do that for yourself," said Lauren Gordon, the lead massage therapist at Ava Bella Day Spa.

Even something as simple as soaking your feet in warm water and magnesium-filled Epsom salt can really help your stress levels.

"When you have high levels of stress, your body actually decreases magnesium and builds up adrenaline and so by soaking your feet in the Epsom salt your body absorbs magnesium back into your body," said Gordon.

Other things you can do is removing dead skin cells from your skin with a dry brush, using calming lotions or oils, or you can apply pressure to key areas to help relieve stress and headaches caused from tension.

The key is to not think of it as pampering, but as a necessity. Just like a car needs preventative maintenance to run well... so too do our bodies.

"I think if you do something for yourself every day, even if it's just five or ten minutes, you're going to results in the long term," said Gordon. "If you wait until your body is just breaking to come get a massage and only get one massage and you think that's going to help you, you're going to be at a little bit of a loss.
