Major work to begin at Big Rock Interchange, lane closures

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Significant changes are expected in one of the state's biggest intersections.

Drivers can expect major changes to their commute beginning tomorrow and it's something they'll have to get used to for at least the next six months.

This construction phase will not only affect I-430 and I-630 but major streets nearby like Financial Center Parkway and Shackleford Road because of lane closures. Officials say that these lane closures are necessary to allow workers to re-stripe the lanes as well as install barriers. These changes are to prepare for the lengthy road work ahead. It will re-direct traffic away from the construction areas that will remain through the summer. For many people who use this route every day for work or school this is yet another significant change and possibly inconvenience but highway officials say they've been working as quickly and efficiently as possible.

"This is the winter time and we've had a couple people say it doesn't seem like they're doing a whole heck a whole lot in the area during the winter," said Danny Straessle, Spokesperson for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. "Well, those are months where activity is usually lower overall, however, the contractors have been pretty much working any calendar day that they can get out there and get some work done," he said.

Construction is set to be completed sometime in 2014.
