Tulsa forward D'Andre Wright was named Conference USA Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week after scoring 25 points to lead the Golden Hurricane to a 74-70 win at UTEP Saturday, the league office announced Monday
It was Wright's first significant playing time since suffering a leg injury in December. The rookie from Lawton, Okla., was dominant in just 21 minutes, as he made 9-of-12 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws in the game. His performance led the Golden Hurricane as it stopped a three-game losing skid and defeated the Miners, which were third in C-USA and had won four of five games going into Saturday's contest.
Wright made 5-of-6 free throws and 3-of-4 field goals with five rebounds in the second half, holding off the Miner surge. He stepped up to the challenge of playing 21 minutes – as many as he had played in his previous two games combined as he worked back to full game-strength – and was strong at the end of the game as Tulsa's only post player with fewer than four fouls. This is the first weekly C-USA award for Wright.
The Golden Hurricane plays host to Houston at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. It is the annual Hoops for Hunger game, and fans can bring a non-perishable or canned food item to benefit the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. The magical transformation act Quick Change will perform at halftime.
