Tulsa Parks Seeking Accreditation and Your Ideas

Posted: Updated:
Tulsa, OK -

Tulsa Parks are looking to get a top honor, but before the organization can get the national accreditation, they want to hear from you. Tulsa Parks in the process of becoming Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies, or CAPRA, accredited.

Bob Hendric, the Special Events Coordinator for Tulsa Parks, says no idea is too small, and the ideas from the meetings will go on a survey that will be sent out randomly to Tulsa residents. The process will take about two years to become CAPRA accredited. Hendrick also says this accreditation will mean lots of things for the city, like possible grant money in the future. But the first step is to just get feedback from people that are already enjoying the parks, and there are already some good ideas.

"I would like to see more activities for kids that are out here. More things for them to do. It's all about exercising and them staying healthy, so if it's setting up obstacle courses or you know just having group activities where people can get involved," says Jared Reid.

"Maybe updating the toys and making them a little bit safer. They are rusty and probably need a new paint job," says Brandee.

If the city if Tulsa does become CAPRA accredited, it will be the first city in Oklahoma to have this top honor. Tulsa Parks takes care of 135 parks in Tulsa on a limited budget, so this survey will help them in the future as well.

"When people say, 'this is what I want in this park,' we try to hear every single response, but at the same time, it's hard to tailor-make a park for a particular individual. So, we are trying to do our best with limited budget and limited staffing for a lot of different parks," says Hendrick.

If you want to give your thoughts on what would make these parks great, the open meetings are Monday, February 11th, at 6 P.M. Till 7:30 P.M. at four locations.
