SEARCY (KATV) - Family, friends and fellow officers said goodbye Wednesday to a Conway police officer killed in the line of duty.

William McGary, 26, was directing traffic around an accident in Conway on Thursday when a driver crashed into his patrol car. He died the next day.

Funeral services were held in Searcy - McGary's hometown. Those who eulogized him said McGary was excellent in everything he did.

"I loved Will McGary; LOVED Will McGary,"said Pastor James Hays of Valley Baptist Church, McGary's home congregation and the site of his funeral. "Will McGary is a special young man."

"He chose to be one of those people who rushes in to danger so that everyone else can rush out and we honor him," said Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel. "I am here on behalf of 3 million Arkansans to express our gratitude."

"There are good officers and there GREAT officers," said Conway Police Chief A. J. Gary. "Will was a great officer."

McGary's service continued after death. He was an organ donor and by the time of his funeral, his gift had already saved three lives.

As he was driven from the church to his final resting place at a cemetery in Romance, his body was driven under an honor flag flown at Ground Zero in New York, American bases in Iraq and Afghanistan plus countless funerals for other American heroes.

McGary is survived by his mother, father and younger sister.
