CONWAY (KATV) - A police officer has died after he was hit bay a car Thursday night while helping direct traffic around a car accident on Dave Ward Drive and Exchange Avenue.

Ofc. William Michael McGary was standing outside his cruiser just before 8:00 p.m. when he was hit by another vehicle. He was airlifted directly from the scene to a Little Rock Hospital. No one else was seriously injured in the accident.

CPD has spent the past day with the McGary family, they are very proud that he was a member of the Conway Police Department and appreciative of all the outpouring of support. The presence of all the officers and other members of our agency has helped them through this difficult time.

"Please continue to offer them love and support in the days ahead."

Arkansas State Police and the Conway Fire Department are helping with the investigation.
