CONWAY (KATV) - A police officer has died after he was hit bay a car Thursday night while helping direct traffic around a car accident on Dave Ward Drive and Exchange Avenue.

Ofc. William Michael McGary was standing outside his cruiser just before 8:00 p.m. when he was hit by another vehicle. He was airlifted directly from the scene to a Little Rock Hospital. No one else was seriously injured in the accident.

The other driver was arrested at the scene and taken into custody but neither their identity nor the charges they face have been released.

McGary has been with the department just shy of two years. A department spokesperson said in a written statement:

"It is with great sadness we announce that Officer William McGary passed away shortly after 5 pm.

"Please continue to keep his family in your prayers. CPD has spent the past day with the McGary family, they are very proud that he was a member of the Conway Police Department and appreciative of all the outpouring of support. The presence of all the officers and other members of our agency has helped them through this difficult time.

"Please continue to offer them love and support in the days ahead."

Arkansas State Police and the Conway Fire Department are helping with the investigation.
