Little Rock security guard ran mentoring program before arrest

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) – New information about the Little Rock school security guard who allegedly sexually assaulted a student shows Robert Myles had several sexual complaints lodged against him before he was hired at the Little Rock School District.

The 39-year-old substitute security guard at Horace Mann Arts and Science Magnet Middle School was arrested Tuesday for allegedly touching a male student inappropriately on campus.

In 2010, a mother, who asked not to be identified, called the child abuse hotline to say Myles had touched her teenage son at his auto repair shop he ran out of his house. She noted he always had young boys at his residence, which set off red flags for the mother.

When her teenage son reported to her that Myles would charge boys to let him give them physical examinations and then touch their genitals, the mother called the Child Abuse Hotline. She says her son was not a minor at the time, and formal charges were not pursued.

Myles also ran a mentoring program called Myles Boys Recovery, which targeted at-risk 13-25 year old boys from broken homes. An investigation into possible incident before the program folded in 2009 is ongoing, according to Little Rock Police Department.

LRPD documents released Thursday show two prior complaints involving Myles and teenage boys were reported but never lead to charges either. Officers assigned to the cases reported that during a "normal" background check, they were able to turn up the information.

Two years later, the mother is relieved Myles is behind bars for another alleged sexual incident. She expressed disbelief that the accused sexual predator could get a job with LRSD.

According to district spokesperson Pamela Smith, the complaints against Myles never showed up during his extensive background check. The checks, conducted by a private firm, are done on all employees prior to employment, said Smith.

She says the district is reviewing their policies in the wake of Myles arrest. Smith said the district "absolutely" would not have hired Myles if any of the complaints had been brought to their attention before his hiring.
