Officials at the Mayes County Sheriff's Department have requested OSBI investigators Tuesday morning after a police-involved shooting at a hotel left a man dead.

It happened just after 2 a.m. when a Mayes County deputy and an off-duty Salina police officer made a traffic stop in front of the Days Inn in Pryor.

According to a release from the sheriff's department, both officials approached the vehicle and believed drugs were inside it. The officers took the driver and passenger from the vehicle and requested a drug K-9 from Choteau check the exterior of the vehicle.

Upon his arrival the dog alerted on the vehicle, which indicated to its handler drugs were inside. Both officers searched the vehicle and found narcotics and arrested Carl Don Thomas, of Pryor, and Robert William Rowbotham, of Locust Grove, on a complaint of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute

In their release, officials said that one of the two suspects told the officers that they were headed to a room at the Days Inn to meet other people. At the door, the officers could hear people inside the room talking, but those people refused to open the door.

The same K-9 officer arrived at the scene and his dog alerted to the door of the motel room. Officers requested the hotel manager open the door and inside the room were a man and woman.

Sheriff Mike Reed with Mayes County told KTUL.com that while the woman was initially compliant, she became uncompliant after the male, Will Perneau, was handcuffed and the officers diverted their attention.

Shortly after he was handcuffed, Reed said that Perneau was able to remove a handgun from his own waist and fired a round towards the officers at the scene.

Reed said that the off-duty Salina officer returned and hit the suspect only after the suspect initially fired a round. Both officers are now on administrative paid leave.

OSBI agents are gathering evidence and interviewing officers and any witnesses. The names of the officers are not being released at this time.
