Beebe set to address Ark. House, Senate

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe plans to address a joint session of the Legislature as lawmakers start a session likely to be dominated by questions about the future of the state's Medicaid program.

Beebe plans to deliver his "state of the state" address to the House and Senate on Tuesday. The Legislature convened Monday for the start of the 89th General Assembly.

Beebe will address a Legislature that's controlled by Republicans for the first time in 138 years. Beebe is a Democrat who is barred by term limits from seeking re-election next year.

Beebe's expected to talk about a projected shortfall in the state's Medicaid budget and his push to expand its eligibility under the federal health care law. Republicans generally are reluctant about the proposed expansion.
