Don't Get Hooked: Skimmers

Being in a hurry is working to the advantage of criminals out to swipe your credit card information.

They are counting on the fact that you will be too busy or rushed to notice a little device they put on ATMs that captures your financial data.

Molded from plastic or plaster, a skimmer can look like it is a part of the ATM.

The Arkansas Better Business Bureau wants you to be on the lookout for these devices so that you…Don't Get Hooked.

When is the last time you carried a lot of cash?  

We live in a society that pays with plastic, and thieves can steal your money without stealing your credit card.

Skimmers placed on ATMs capture your card's data when you swipe.

"These people…they put these devices on there and send it wirelessly so they're usually pretty close," says Michael Rohrer with the Arkansas Better Business Bureau.

Michael Rohrer with the Arkansas Better Business Bureau says thieves target ATMs that will be busy for short intervals…say for example an ATM in the vicinity of Verizon Arena right before a big concert.

"Just be wary," says Rohrer.  "And look. And if you notice anything different don't use it. It may be a little bit of an inconvenience but certainly it will help you in the long run if you're cautious."

Rohrer says this skimming scam isn't are prevalent here in Arkansas as it is in other states but that it has popped up here and there…so beware.
