Community grieves for Bauxite teen killed in wreck

Posted: Updated:

BAUXITE (KATV)- Just one day after a Bauxite teenager's life was cut tragically short in a car wreck, his peers hold a vigil to remember him.

"They asked me to go the office and then everyone in the office was just looking at me when I walked in," said Florencia Olguins, girlfriend of Zach Bynum, the teen killed in Monday morning's car accident. "I thought I was in trouble or something. I didn't know what was going on," she said.

Olguins says her life changed the moment she found out her boyfriend of two years was killed in a car wreck.

"I'm sorry to tell you this but Zach died," she said, describing how school officials told her the news.

Zach and his 17-year-old best friend were driving down Sardis Rd. in Bauxite. Police say the driver, Zach's best friend, tried to pass a car in front of him when he lost control. They slammed into a light pole and Zach was killed instantly. Zach's friend survived the accident.

"He was devastated," said Alexis Massey, a friend and former girlfriend of the driver. "He just looked at me and said he just killed his best friend and I told him it wasn't his fault," she said.

But tonight the community didn't focus on why the accident happen or who was to blame. Those who loved Zach just comforted each other and cherished old memories or thought about all the memories that were never made.

"We always talked about how were going to live in a big house and have a lot of kids," said Olguin, "I would give him a big hug and tell him that I love him so much," she said.
