Arkansas father-in-law sentenced to 35 years in prison

Posted:

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Prosecutors in northeast Arkansas say a 59-year-old man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for hiring someone to kill his son-in-law.

Prosecutor Scott Ellington's office said Carl Kelley was sentenced to the prison term Friday after he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder last month in a murder-for-hire scheme that left Kelley's son-in-law, Marc Despain, dead in Jonesboro.

Kelley, the gunman and another man were arrested shortly after Despain's death in 2011. Kelley's daughter and Despain's widow, Michelle Despain, has also been arrested and charged with capital murder in her late husband's death. She is scheduled to go on trial in February.

Lawyers for Kelley and Michelle Despain didn't immediately return phone messages left Friday.
