2011 Earthquake Damage Revealed In Downtown Tulsa Building

Posted: Updated:

Damage to a downtown building is revealed a year following Oklahoma's strongest recorded earthquake.

The Excalibur building sits right at the corner of 4th and Main Streets. It's been empty for the better part of a year, except for the Arby's restaurant on the ground floor.

But, now it's closed and gone as well after a structural engineer found some serious earthquake damage.

The building is owned by the World Publishing Company, the same company that prints the Tulsa World. Managing Editor Susan Ellerbach said the inspection began after someone reported falling debris back in August.

Sidewalks on either side have been closed for pedestrian safety. No one has been injured and it's unclear how long the sidewalks will remain blocked, Ellerbach said.

Engineers said this damage was caused by 5.6 magnitude earthquake that struck deep below the ground near Prague in November 2011.

The Excalibur was completed in 1913. It's been a clothing store, retail space and office space in its lifetime. Ellerbach said there are no current plans to demolish the structure. Further inspections are needed to determine the next steps.

Before the World company learned of the damage, Ellerbach said, there were no set plans on the building's future use.
