Tulsa guard James Woodard was named Conference USA Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week after averaging 16.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in two games last week, the league office announced Monday.
A native of Edmond, Okla., Woodard totaled 33 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Golden Hurricane to a 1-1 record last week, including a win over crosstown rival Oral Roberts on Saturday. In the game at Oral Roberts, Woodard scored all 18 points in the second half to lead TU to the comeback win after trailing by 17 points in the second half. He hit a three-pointer that gave the Hurricane its first lead with 4:40 left, and later clinched the victory by making free throws in the final seconds. Wednesday at No. 13 Creighton, Woodard recorded his third double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, with four steals.
The Golden Hurricane returns to action Saturday when it plays Florida State in the Orange Bowl Classic at 2 p.m. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
