UPDATE: Reaction at El Dorado hazardous waste disposal facility under control

Posted: Updated:

EL DORADO (KATV) - A chemical reaction at the Clean Harbors plant was brought under control late Wednesday night.

Around 4:00 that afternoon, chlorinated chemicals used to treat residential swimming pools reacted and released a large cloud over the transportation yard. The Union County Jail and a nearby convenience yard had to be evacuated.

Plant officials said residents in the area may experience eye irritation if they were exposed to the cloud. They also encouraged those residents to stay indoors and check for updates from local authorities.

No injuries have been reported.

Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) records show that the facility used to be called Teris until a name change in 2006. In 2008, Clean Harbors was given a notice of violation by ADEQ for violating the Arkansas Hazardous Waste Management Act.
