UPDATE: Hector Elementary catches fire

Posted: Updated:

POPE COUNTY (KATV) - An elementary school caught fire Thursday night.

Firefighters were called to Hector Elementary around 10:00 p.m. When they arrived, flames could be seen coming from the northwest corner of the building. Winds caused flames to spread to the east but fire crews were able to stop the blaze before it reached the middle school.

The building that caught fire was the oldest on the campus, built in 1952. Officials say the room where the fire started held canned goods the school collected for a food drive they were holding.

No word what started the blaze.
