Early morning house fire kills Little Rock man

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - A 31-year-old man was killed Thursday in an early morning house fire.

Captain Jason Weaver with the Little Rock Fire Department told Channel 7 News in a phone interview that firefighters were first called to 8715 Verbena Drive around 5:30.

A man and his wife living downstairs had to break themselves out through a bedroom window. They went back in through the front door and used a garden hose to put out enough of the fire to warn their 18-year-old son and 31-year-old nephew upstairs that they needed to get out.

The son broke out a window in his bedroom and jumped out. He was later taken to UAMS to be treated for back pains, cuts on his hands and trouble breathing but is expected to be okay.

Their nephew was not able to get out.

Firefighters tried to help him but the fire downstairs was so intense, Capt. Weaver said the heat and smoke on the second story "was not survivable." They put out enough of the fire to safely go back upstairs and found his body. The body has been taken to the Pulaski County Coroner to officially rule a cause of death.

The adult man living downstairs was later taken to UAMS to be treated for breathing problems but is expected to be okay. His wife was unharmed.

The house was declared a total loss and the Red Cross was called in to help the family find shelter.

No more details will be released until police and fire investigators finish their investigation.

Channel 7's Roger Susanin will have more on this case tonight at 5 & 6.
