Suspect arrested in Forrest City murder

Posted: Updated:

FORREST CITY (Times-Herald) - Police are investigating the city's fourth homicide of the year, with three of them having occurred in a span of about one month.

According to a press release on Sunday, investigators arrested Kendrix Black, 20, on charges of second-degree murder for his alleged involvement in the stabbing death of 54-year-old John Bey. The stabbing occurred just after midnight Sunday at 821 S. Division Street, the home of Patricia Woods.

When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered a man who told officers "they were arguing and then he stabbed him," according to a police report. Woods told officers she was asleep when she heard a scuffle and got out of bed. Woods said that as she reached her bedroom door, Bey met her and said he had been cut. She said Bey then walked back to the kitchen and collapsed. Several other people at the scene told officers they had not seen or heard anything. Bey was transported to Forrest City Medical Center where he died just after 1:30 Sunday morning.

According to police department officials, Bey was stabbed one time and his body has been sent to the Arkansas Crime Lab for an autopsy.

Black was taken into custody just after 9 a.m. Sunday at his home and charged with second-degree murder. He is currently being held at the St. Francis County Jail without bond, pending arraignment.

"First I want to extend my prayers and condolences to the family of the victim, John Bey. The Forrest City CID is working diligently to get to the bottom of what happened. This was not a random act, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Forrest City Police Detective Division as this investigation is ongoing," said Chief E.P. Reynolds in the press release.

In July, FCPD investigators were called to the Christopher Homes Apartment Complex on Dawson Road where they found the body of Theophis Ivory, 58, in the living room of an apartment. Police said Ivory died from a neck wound.

On Nov. 7, investigators were called to the Cope Cove Apartment Complex about 7 p.m., after the body of Diabre McCraw, 31, was found. Tommy Barber, 28, of Forrest City was arrested last week for capital murder, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, possession of a firearm by a certain person and two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor. He is being held at the St. Francis County Jail without bond. On Nov. 9, investigators arrested Dwayne Haggins, 28, and Michael Duke, 22, both of Forrest City, on charges of abuse of a corpse in connection with McCraw's murder.

On Nov. 26, Dominique Tobar, 20, was shot and killed near the intersection of Park Drive and North Washington. Terrance Mays, 20, 2039 Dell Drive has been charged with capital murder in Tobar's death. Mays, who was free on $100,000 bond for a 2010 capital murder charge at the time of Tobar's death, is also being held at the St. Francis County Jail without bond.
