UPDATE: Attempted murder suspect captured

Posted: Updated:

HARRISON (KATV) - An attempted murder suspect was arrested Monday afternoon after escaping from authorities Saturday.

Boone County Sheriff Danny Hickman said in a press release on his office's website that deputies arrested 27-year-old Phillip Engles around 2:00 p.m. at a residence on Martin Drive without incident.

Boone County sheriff's deputies were called to Unique Treasures on Highway 65 South in Bellefonte. According to investigators, the store owner was shot twice before disarming Engles, who got away with more than $1,000 in stolen merchandise.

Engles then allegedly dropped off the vehicle used in the robbery, as well as some of the stolen items at a home in southern Boone County before he and a female companion drove away in a four wheel drive truck to a remote area on the border of Boone County and Newton County.

Game and Fish Officers pursued the suspects using all-terrain vehicles; the truck was disabled and abandoned on a remote trail. Phillip Engles reportedly left 29-year old Mandy Engles with the truck and continued running on foot.

Mandy Engles is charged with hindering the apprehension of Phillip Engles.

Phillip Engles was charged with three felony counts: attempted capital murder, aggravated robbery and felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held at the Boone County Jail.

The store owner was flown to a Springfield, Missouri hospital shortly after the robbery and was listed in good condition as of early Sunday morning.
