(KATV) The Mississippi River is a
critical highway but the low water levels are nearing record lows, threatening
to bring barge traffic to a halt.
The Mississippi is the
nation's largest river system. Right now barges are leaving ports with lighter
loads so barges sit higher.
Waterway organizations
want a presidential declaration of emergency. They want the Corps of Engineers
to remove exposed rock and release a water from reservoirs.
Federal lawmakers are
meeting Thursday with the Army Assistant Secretary to address the issue.
For now, the river is
working in favor of Arkansas' corn and soybean growers.
