Griffin named to Ways & Means, rules out higher office in 2014

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (KATV) – Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-02) made two major announcements Friday.

First, he has ruled out any interest in running for higher office in the next election.

"I am not going to run for Senate in 2014. I am not going to run for governor in 2014," said Rep. Griffin (AR-02).

He was also named to the House Ways and Means Committee. It's the oldest committee in Congress, responsible for considering legislation concerning trade agreements, the national debt, the tax code and programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

"I am honored to be selected to serve on the House Ways and Means Committee....Like the Arkansans I represent, I think the tax code is too complex and too burdensome, and as a Member of the Ways and Means Committee, I'll continue to fight for a fairer, flatter and simpler tax code that will better serve all Americans and encourage job creation," he said in a press release.

Since its founding in 1789, only eight Arkansans have served on the committee. One of those was Wilbur D. Mills, who was the longest-serving chair of the committee, serving from 1958 to 1975.
