White House threatens veto of defense bill

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (Arkansas News Bureau) - The White House on Thursday threatened to veto the defense authorization bill now being debated by the Senate that would freeze Air Force mission shifts and keep the A-10 mission with Fort Smith's 188th Fighter Wing.

In February, the Air Force proposed $487 billion in spending reductions over the next decade that fell heavily on the Air National Guard. In Arkansas, it would have moved the A-10 jets out of Fort Smith and replaced them with a drone mission.

In a statement of policy, the Office of Management and Budget said the administration "strongly objects" to the restriction as well as a requirement to have a commission study the make up of the Air Force.

The Senate began debate on the bill Wednesday but may not complete action on it until next week.
