(CNN) - The future of Hostess Brands is up in the air once again.

A last-ditch effort to work out differences with its bakers' union broke down Tuesday. The maker of Ding Dongs, Twinkies and Wonder Bread headed back to bankruptcy court Wednesday in its move to shutdown its operations for good.

The judge overseeing the case was hoping the two sides could come to an agreement in order to save 18,000 jobs but with talks having failed, liquidation is looking more likely.

The bakers' union had been protesting a new contract that imposed wage and benefit cuts.
