Former Philander Smith recruiting director sentenced on sex charge

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - A former Philander Smith College recruiting director who pleaded "no contest" to promoting prostitution was sentenced Tuesday.

George Gray must serve five days in jail, five years probation, pay $7,500 in costs and do 250 hours of community service. That is less than the maximum he could have faced - six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Gray was arrested last October after police received a complaint from a then-16-year-old student from the Bahamas who said Gray assaulted her in his office in December 2010. Officials at the Little Rock campus said after Gray's arrest that they had investigated the incident and Gray had resigned.

If Gray had not pled out, he would have gone to trial on charges of sexual assault and promoting a sexual performance by a child.
