Tonight at 10: Veterans displaced by closed Little Rock home

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - When the Department of Veterans Affairs closed down their controversial Little Rock veterans home, they said it would be a very smooth transition for everyone who was displaced.

The state was forced to close that home after a report outlined up to $10 million in needed repairs.

The 70 or so veterans inside were moved to various nursing homes and apartments across the state. One of the veterans who was staying there, Robert Lindsey, said most of the veterans didn't want to go but wanted a new home built. Authorities said it was too expensive and keeping it open was never really an option.

Many of the displaced veterans are in their 70s and 80s. For Lindsey, the stress of having to move and find a new place started to affect his health.

There are still no plans for a new home. Most states in the south have at least three.

See what steps are being taken to possibly get a new Little Rock veterans home within the next 2 - 3 years, tonight on Nightside.
