Lawyers Against Hunger Feed Hundreds of Families

Posted: Updated:

We are just a few days away from Thanksgiving. It can be a stressful, time even when you have all the turkey and trimmings you like. But just imagine not having enough food.

Many Tulsans are taking part in the annual tradition of giving. There's a group of local lawyers who have started a charity called "Lawyers Against Hunger." Their hard work is helping balance the scales of hunger.

Today, hundreds of people lined up at Iron Gate today for 700 turkeys and 400 boxes of food -- all collected through donations by the group.

They're feeding a lot more people now than when they started back in 2009. Back then, they only had 25 turkeys. But since then, the effort has grown in Tulsa and expanded to Oklahoma City, Norman and El Reno.  Lawyers in those regions compete against each other to give more and more. And more they did. The group gave away 4,000 turkeys across the state this year.

This year the Tulsa team also raised 80-thousand dollars. Since the start, they've raised 250-thousand dollars and fed 10-thousand families.  .

The goal is to feed the needy but to also show that lawyers also have a heart.

"As attorneys we do a lot of pro bono work, we serve on a lot of boards, but not many people hear about that," said Hugh Robert, a co-founder of Lawyers Against Hunger. "So we wanted to try to do something that would address a serious need in our state and by doing this, it's something people can actually see."

This coming year, 15-other states are signing on to be part of Lawyers Against Hunger.

The lawyers also give out hams at Easter.
