Arkansas House set to vote on speaker

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - The Arkansas House is voting on whether to replace next year's speaker after Republicans won a majority in the chamber for the first time since Reconstruction.

The House is scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to replace Democratic Rep. Darrin Williams of Little Rock as the speaker designate for the chamber. Republicans won 51 seats in the 100-member chamber, but a recount in northeast Arkansas could deny the GOP of an outright majority.

The House will first vote on whether to confirm Williams as next year's speaker. If he fails to win a majority of that vote, the House will hold a new election on next year's leader.

Williams has said he's unlikely to run if he fails to clear that first vote.

Channel 7's Janelle Lilley will have more on this story tonight at 5 & 6.
