Barn opens at Oaklawn ahead of January start

HOT SPRINGS (AP) - Oaklawn has opened its barn area in advance of the live meet that starts Jan. 11.

The Hot Springs track on Monday said horses from the stables of trainers Kenny Smith and Steve Hobby were the first to arrive.

Smith sent 20 horses from Delaware Park and Hobby sent eight from Monmouth Park.

The track at Oaklawn opens Nov. 19 for training.

Oaklawn will offer five stakes races over its 4-day opening weekend, starting with the $75,000 Fifth Season on opening day.

The 56-day meet culminates on April 13 with the $1 million, Grade 1 Arkansas Derby.
