Benton man charged with multiple felonies after late night standoff
BENTON (KATV) - Police arrested a suspect on multiple felony charges after a standoff around 12:30 Friday morning.
Officers were called to the North Service Loop of Alcoa Road and I-30 on reports a motorcycle had crashed and two riders were hurt. The driver, 40-year-old John Bunton, allegedly ran away before they could arrive, though, leaving his passenger behind.
Police caught up with Bunton on Shelby Drive in the Heritage Farms subdivision. He warned he would fight officers and hurt himself if they didn't leave him alone but negotiators were able to talk him down and took him into custody without any more problems.
Bunton's passenger was med-flighted to Baptist Hospital in Little Rock where, at last check, they were listed in critical condition. Their name has not been released yet while police notify their family.
Bunton was charged with three counts of aggravated assault, DWI, leaving the scene of an injury accident, felony fleeing and refusal to submit to arrest. He is being held in lieu of $250,000 bond.
More charges could still be filed.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Benton PD at (501) 778-1171 or 315-TIPS. You can also send an anonymous crime to CRIMES (274-637) with BNPD in the body of the text.
