Cornbread Festival celebrates second year

Posted: Updated:

The Cornbread festival wrapped up its second year this weekend.

Last year, organizers hoped to attract 800 people to its inaugural event. More than 2,600 people showed up.

"Cornbread is almost a lost art," said Anita Davis with the Bernice Garden (one of the sponsors). "I thought I would bring people together as a community to make cornbread and to enjoy food together."

Those wanting to show off their cornbread baking skills entered either an amateur or professional level of competition. There were several categories including  traditional, non-traditional and sweet.

The entries were judged by everyone attending the festival as well as a panel of celebrity judges including Lisa Fischer with B98.5, cookbook author Jessica Harris and Broadway performer Lawrence Hamilton.

The 2012 winners are as follows:

Best Pro Traditional – Fresh Ideas at Philander Smith
Best Pro Non-Traditional - Loblolly Creamery
Best Pro Sweet - Brown Sugar Bake Shop
Best Pro Overall – Fresh Ideas
Best Side Item - The Root
Best Amateur Sweet (no entries, no winner)
Best Amateur Non Traditional - William Fisher
Best Amateur Traditional - Terry Wright
Best Amateur Overall - William Fisher
Best In Show - Fresh Ideas at Philander Smith
