North Arkansas Linemen Aid in Hurricane Sandy Restoration Efforts

Posted: Updated:

(KATV, Source: North Arkansas Electric Cooperative) Salem – On Saturday, November 3rd, four linemen of North Arkansas Electric Cooperative will leave their homes in North Central Arkansas to help with power restoration efforts in the Northeast. The linemen will travel to Memphis where they will meet up with other crews from cooperatives in Arkansas and travel north to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Estimates are that 3.4 million people are still without power in the regions devastated by Superstorm Sandy. To make matters worse, another storm system is moving into the coastal area this weekend and predicted to bring with it colder temperatures along with wind and possible snow. Such conditions will make power restoration difficult.  It is unknown at this time how long the power outages will last. Some early reports estimate that residents of New Jersey and New York will be without power from a week to one month.

"North Arkansas Electric Cooperative is always ready and willing to assist others in their time of need and it is at times like this when the cooperative spirit shines the brightest.  This is what sets us apart from other utilities.  Our hearts are with the people affected and we are praying for the safety of the people along the east coast and all of the personnel who are assisting in the recovery efforts," stated Mel Coleman, CEO of North Arkansas Electric Cooperative.

North Arkansas Electric Cooperative is one of seventeen distribution cooperatives in the state of Arkansas that provides electric service to more than 36,000 member accounts in six different North Central Arkansas counties.
