Arkansas man gets life sentence for mother's death

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A Dardanelle man convicted of beating his 71-year-old mother to death with a shovel has been sentenced to life in prison.

A jury in Johnson County recommended the life sentence Thursday for 49-year-old Tommy Bowden. A day earlier, the jury convicted him of first-degree murder in the January death of his mother, Julie Richardson.

The Southwest Times Record reports (http://is.gd/ewKOmb ) that Bowden's attorney, Michael Robbins, sought a lesser sentence, saying his client's actions were a result of mental illness.

A psychiatrist testified for the defense that Bowden suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, but prosecutors argued that Bowden should be held responsible for his actions.

Prosecutors played an audio recording of Bowden's interview with police in which Bowden admitted breaking into his mother's home in Hagarville and beating her to death.
