(CNN) - A dispute between Beijing and Tokyo is proving profitable for a U-S automaker.

Ford says sales last month were up 35 percent compared to one year ago. The company sold more than 59,000 vehicles in September, a new record for Ford in China.

The territorial dispute between China and Japan centers around a group of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea.

Japanese car sales in China seem to be one casualty of the flap. Toyota's September sales figures for China were down by 49 percent compared to the year before, while Honda's sales sank 41 percent and Mazda and Nissan sales dropped 35 percent.
