Rains hurt Arkansas cotton harvest

LAKE VILLAGE, Ark. (AP) - The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service says weekend rains in Arkansas have damaged the state's cotton crop with Chicot County hardest hit.

Staff member Gus Wilson with the UA Division of Agriculture said Tuesday that four to six inches of rain fell from Saturday through Monday in Chicot County where 95% of the cotton bolls were open. Wilson said up to 10% of the county's 14,500 acres of cotton were affected and will suffer in quality and some bolls will fall out.

The extension service says about 21% of the state's cotton crop has been harvested.
