Poll: Gov. Beebe vs. Ark. GOP

LITTLE ROCK - Who would win in a matchup between one of the nation's most popular governors and the South's continued conservative swell?

Governor Mike Beebe has been at the center of the Arkansas Democratic Party's messages this year. Meanwhile, state Republicans have focused on President Barack Obama's continued lack of support in the Natural State. They hope to ride that wave to win majorities in both houses of the state legislature this November for the first time since Reconstruction.

A new Talk Business - Hendrix College poll of more than 2,000 likely voters ventured to see how successful they would be if the election were held today.

It found Governor Mike Beebe continues to have strong support statewide with a 64 percent favorability. In a matchup between generic Democratic and Republican candidates for state legislative seats, though, Republicans hold a 13 point lead.

Dr. Jay Barth, with the Hendrix College Department of Politics and International Relations, helped craft and analyze the polls.

"Both parties are holding those voters who identify with them fairly well; 82 percent of Democrats and 89 percent of Republicans are committed to voting for state legislative candidates of their party," Barth said. "The huge problem for Democrats is that they were losing Independents statewide by nearly two to one..."
