JPD releases dash cam video

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO (KATV) - Police released dashcam video of the night 21-year-old Chavis Carter died.

Officers says that Carter shot and killed himself while he was handcuffed in the back of a squad car and Carter's family is still demanding answers. Their lawyer says the video should shed some light on what happened but still leaves many questions to be answered.

"It's strange, it's unlike most you've ever seen before," said Benjamin Irwin. "This young man ends up dead in the back seat of a squad car when he's in the one place where they have a duty and an obligation to protect him," said Irwin.

The video shows Carter and his friends when they are first pulled over in a pick up truck the night of July 28th. The shooting itself cannot be seen.
