Jonesboro police release video reenactment of squad car shooting

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO (CNN) - Police released a video reenactment this week of how a 21-year-old suspect could have shot himself in the head while handcuffed in the back of a squad car.

The video shows an officer playing the part of "Chavis Carter" getting into the back of the police cruiser while handcuffed and pulling a gun out of his pants.

Authorities said the video is only part of their investigation and did not claim what happens in the re-enactment is exactly what happened on July 28. When the video first aired on our ABC station in Jonesboro, KAIT, Tuesday morning, it included a message from the Jonesboro Police Department which read that the video is a "non-evidentiary reproduction of facts and circumstances associated with the pending investigation of the Chavis Carter in-custody death."

Officers in Jonesboro stopped the truck Carter was in after they received a report for a suspicious vehicle. They arrested him after learning he had an outstanding warrant.

Police say they frisked Carter twice and found marijuana on him but missed the gun they now claim he had in his pants.

The NAACP has called for a full investigation.

The FBI is looking into the case.

PLEASE NOTE the video above includes a video re-enactment done by officers with the Jonesboro Police Department. The video has been released to the public at large and is now being used as part of the investigation into this incident.
