The Danny Manning Era as The University of Tulsa's head basketball coach gets underway officially on November 11th as the Golden Hurricane hosts LSU Shreveport in the 2012 men's basketball regular season opener.
The Hurricane schedule features 10 teams with 20 or more wins and a total of 10 teams as well that made post-season tournament play a year ago – five in the NCAA (Wichita State, Creighton, Florida State, Memphis and Southern Miss), three in the NIT (ORU, Marshall and UCF), and one each in the College Basketball Invitational (TCU) and the CollegeInsider.com (Rice).
"We are very pleased with the schedule we have put together in our first year," Manning said. "With 10 post-season teams and five NCAA Tournament opponents, this young team will be tested every night on the court. They'll have to grow up quickly, but that is why we worked hard during July and August, and will play the four Canadian exhibition games this week. I believe our non-conference schedule, especially with road contests at Creighton and Wichita State and a neutral site game against Florida State, will challenge and prepare our team for Conference USA play."
For the second straight year, Tulsa will face three old Missouri Valley Conference rivals in the likes of Creighton and Wichita State on the road and Missouri State at home, while the Hurricane also hosts an old Western Athletic Conference counterpart TCU.
Tulsa opens the season on Sunday, November 11th as former TU basketball player Kyle Blankenship, the nephew of current TU head football coach Bill Blankenship, brings his LSU Shreveport team to Tulsa to start a new era in Tulsa basketball history. Blankenship is in his first year as the head coach of the Pilots.
The Hurricane travels west in November for a three-game tournament in San Diego. Tulsa plays Northern Kentucky (Nov. 15), San Diego (Nov. 16) and closes out the weekend against Cal State Northridge (Nov. 17). This will be the first meeting in the series against both Northern Kentucky and San Diego, while Tulsa has a 2-1 series edge against Northridge.
Tulsa plays two games over the Thanksgiving weekend as Jackson State visits the Reynolds Center on Wednesday, Nov. 21, while Stephen F. Austin comes to town two days after Thanksgiving for a Nov. 24th contest.
Tulsa leads the series against Jackson State 5-0, including a 57-51 road win last year. Tulsa and Stephen F. Austin have met only once before as SFA won the season opener in 2005 with an 82-72 win at the Reynolds Center.
TU continues its most-played rivalry when the Golden Hurricane hits the road to face Wichita State on Nov. 28. The series, which began in 1930-31, is nearly even through 121 contests as the Shockers hold a 61-60 advantage.
The month of December tips off with old MVC rival Missouri State coming to the Reynolds Center on Wednesday, Dec. 5. The Hurricane will then host another former conference rival, from the Western Athletic Conference, as the Big XII's TCU Horned Frogs are on the home schedule for Sunday, Dec. 9.
Missouri State grabbed a 69-64 overtime victory against the Hurricane a year ago in Springfield, Mo. Tulsa has won eight of the last nine home games against the Bears, but trail the overall series 19-17.
After the TCU game on December 9th, the Hurricane will play away from home five times, including four road games and a neutral site game.
Tulsa travels across the border to Little Rock, Arkansas, to face the UALR Trojans on Saturday, Dec. 15. Tulsa leads the series 3-2 after capturing a 65-49 victory at home a year ago. The two losses in the series for the Hurricane have both come on the Trojans' home court. UALR posted an overall 15-16 mark a year ago, but had a 12-4 mark to finish in first place in the Sun Belt West Division.
The Hurricane plays a return game against Missouri Valley Conference favorite Creighton on Wednesday, Dec. 19, in Omaha, Neb. The Bluejays claimed an 83-64 victory in Tulsa a year ago in the first meeting since the 2000-01 season. CU went on to post an overall 29-6 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round. Former rivals in The Valley, the two teams have met 76 times before as Tulsa leads the series 43-33.
After a year off in the series, cross-town rivals Tulsa and Oral Roberts face each other at the ORU Mabee Center before the Christmas Holiday with a Dec. 22 contest. Tulsa leads the series 31-16 and has won the last three games, including a 57-52 road win on January 20, 2010. Oral Roberts finished the 2011-12 campaign with an overall 27-7 record, finished first in the Mid-Continent Conference and advanced to the NIT.
Tulsa will play 2012 NCAA participant Florida State in a neutral site game at the Orange Bowl Classic in Miami, Florida on Dec. 29. Tulsa and FSU have played three times before, as the Seminoles have won all three meetings. The last game between the two schools came on December 30, 1982 at the San Diego Cabrillo Classic. The Seminoles posted an overall 25-10 record and finished in third-place in the ACC a year ago.
Tulsa begins the new year by closing out the non-conference portion of the schedule against Buffalo on Wednesday, January 2. Tulsa won the only other meeting in the series with an 80-75 victory in the opening game of the 2001 Yahoo! Sports Invitational in Kahuku, Hawaii.
The C-USA schedule for the Hurricane will get started on the road in a much-anticipated contest as student meets mentor. Tulsa travels to open the league season against the SMU Mustangs on Sunday, Jan. 6. The game features Tulsa's Manning leading his team against his old college coach Larry Brown, as Brown is also in his first season as the SMU head coach.
Manning led the Brown-coached University of Kansas Jayhawks basketball team to the 1988 NCAA Championship.
Up next for the Hurricane is the team that ended Tulsa's 2011-12 season. Tulsa travels to Huntington, West Virginia to face the Marshall Thundering Herd on Wednesday, Jan. 9. The two teams battled to three overtimes in the C-USA Championship Quarterfinals last March before the Herd captured a 105-100 victory. Tulsa leads the overall series 8-5, but has won only one of four games in West Virginia.
Marshall finished the 2011-12 season with an overall 21-14 record and made an appearance in the NIT.
Home games against Rice (Jan. 12) and UTEP (Jan. 16) await the Hurricane. Last year, Tulsa won both contests against the Owls and split the season series with the Miners. The Owls had a 19-16 record and participated in the Collegeinsider.com post-season tournament.
On January 19th, Tulsa travels to New Orleans to start a two-game road swing as the Hurricane plays the Tulane Green Wave on Saturday, Jan. 19, and at Houston (Jan. 23). Tulsa won both games last year in the Tulane series, including a 60-56 home win and a 73-69 victory on the road. Houston and Tulsa split the season series a year ago, each winning on their own home court.
Tulsa will look for revenge against Southern Miss as the Golden Eagles come to town on Saturday, Jan. 26. The Hurricane suffered a hard-fought 77-69 overtime loss at USM last year in the only game of the season between the two teams. Southern Miss finished the 2011-12 season with an overall 25-9 record and finished second in the C-USA standings, while advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
Tulsa begins the month of February at defending C-USA Champion and NCAA participant Memphis on Saturday, Feb. 2. The last time Tulsa visited Memphis the Hurricane claimed a 68-65 victory on February 2, 2011. Last year, Memphis won in Tulsa by a score of 78-66 en route to winning the league title and posting an overall 26-9 mark.
The Hurricane gets UAB (Feb. 6) at home this year as the two teams have controlled their home courts since 2008. Tulsa is 4-1 at home in the series. UAB claimed a 68-64 victory at home last year in the regular season finale, while the year before Tulsa grabbed a 78-62 home win.
Three days later, Tulsa goes on the road to face the UTEP Miners (Feb. 9) for the second meeting of the season.
Tulsa comes back home for its second meeting of the year against the Houston Cougars, while the Hurricane hosts East Carolina (Feb. 20) for the only meeting between the two schools this season. Tulsa has a 9-1 series advantage against the Pirates and has won the last eight games.
TU closes out the month of February with its only meeting this season against the UCF Knights (Feb. 23). The two teams have played 13 times and Tulsa leads the series 8-5, but has only won one of six games in Orlando. The last meeting in Orlando came in Feb. 2011, as the home team held on for a one-point victory, 58-57.
With March Madness approaching, Tulsa closes out the regular season with three games in the month of March, including home contests against Tulane (Mar. 2) and SMU (Mar. 6) in the second meeting of the year between the schools. Tulsa ends the regular campaign with a March 9 game at Rice in Houston, Texas.
The league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship will be on the line, March 13-16, as Conference USA's 12 teams will converge at Tulsa's downtown BOK Center for the 2013 C-USA Championship.
"Along with our conference slate, we feel that this is the type of schedule that will help prepare us for the C-USA Tournament, which we are excited to host at the BOK Center," said Manning. "We hope our fans are just as excited to watch us play as we are to go out and compete this year."
Tulsa will play exhibition games against Emporia State (Kan.) on Sunday, Oct. 27 and against Panhandle State (Okla.) on Sunday, Nov. 4.
