Greg Childs suffers season ending injury

Posted: Updated:

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Our sister station, KSTP, tells us former Razorback Greg Childs tore the patellar tendons in both knees Saturday night.

The injury will end his rookie season before it begins.

Two NFL sources said late Saturday night the Vikings feared he'd suffered a significant injury to both knees, which were swollen after he crashed to the turf untouched while diving for a pass in practice and immediately screamed in pain.

The Vikings released a statement early Sunday morning confirming Childs tore both patellar tendons and he'll have surgery soon.

Only days ago, Childs had pronounced himself healthy from the patellar tendon tear he suffered as a junior at the University of Arkansas in 2010, as well as the calf strain he suffered in May's rookie mini camp.

A fourth-round draft pick, Childs signed a four-year deal in May that included a $300,584 bonus. He now faces a lengthy recovery that could affect his ability to contribute in 2013 as well.

The Vikings had hoped Childs would come on strong enough in camp to earn the starting job at split end during Jerome Simpson's three-game suspension to start the season.
