Chavis Carter Death: Community demanding answers from Jonesboro PD

Posted: Updated:

It has been five days since 21-year-old Chavis Carter was found shot to death in the back of a patrol car. Officers believe he shot himself. But his death has received attention beyond Arkansas. Community members say that the Jonesboro police's explanation just is not cutting it.

"We are calling this press conference out of concern for the activities that happened on Saturday night which resulted in the death of Mr. Chavis Carter," said Rev. Adrian Rodgers, Pastor at Fullness of Joy Church.

It is bizarre death with an unsettling explanation that has sparked outrage in the community prompting Jonesboro residents to stand up and speak.

"We're calling for our community to remain calm and have patience as this is being investigated," said Rodgers.

Jonesboro police say Carter used the a gun officers apparently missed during a search to kill himself.

"Any given officer has missed something on a search, be it drugs, knife, razor blades, this instance it happened to be a gun," said Sgt. Lyle Waterworth, of the Jonesboro Police Dept.

Problem is Carter was handcuffed behind his back and double locked and searched. Residents of Jonesboro are not buying the story.

"It just seems to be very, very, very, very strange that somebody could shoot themselves in the head while handcuffed from the back," said Rodgers.

Although no fingers are being pointed yet, Rev. Rodgers says looking into this case should be a top priority.

"We're calling on our police force, our police chief, the FBI and all that are involved to please do this and do this as quickly and as thoroughly as possible," said Rodgers.

The FBI is now investigating the case. More information will come to light once the autopsy results are released.
