Searcy woman's death first reported suicide, now ruled homicide

Posted: Updated:

It took a few months, but White County Sheriff Deputies say they've solved a death investigation.

Investigators say they didn't have enough evidence to arrest the killer right away, but that's changed.

Donna Kennedy's April 20th death was initially reported as a suicide, but now investigators say Kennedy was murdered and the man who they claim is responsible is behind bars.

Kennedy died inside her home on Cutoff Road in Searcy and the only person around was her boyfriend.  Charles Berry told police he heard a gunshot while he was working outside and that Kennedy must have taken her own life.

Deputies were suspicious right away but there wasn't much they could do until the crime lab report came back recently.  The report showed that Kennedy had been killed by someone else.  Berry later admitted his initial story was a lie.  He now claims he was just playing around with a gun when it went off.  Berry says the bullet hit Kennedy in the head and he panicked.

Berry is locked up now and stands accused of second degree murder.  Berry's bond was set at two hundred thousand dollars.  His court date though has still not been announced and Sheriff Deputies don't know whether or not he's hired an attorney.
