New e-coli testing starts Monday

Posted: Updated:

The US Department of Agriculture is expanding the search for dangerous bacteria in meat.

Starting Monday, the USDA's Food and Safety inspection services will begin testing ground beef for six additional strains of E-coli. If the meat is contaminated, it will not be allowed to be sold and could be subject to a recall.

There are more than 700 different strains of the bacteria E-coli. Most of these types are harmless, but some can cause serious problems by attacking the intestinal tract.

This testing is another initiative developed by the President's Food Safety Working Group, which is designed to prevent food borne illnesses by enforcing more testing and improving the way food is handled.
