Drought indicators piling up as Ark. growers worry

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Most of Arkansas is experiencing a moderate drought and that's causing concern among some farmers.

On Friday, the National Weather Service said that last month was the driest May ever recorded over much of Arkansas. One rain reporting station six miles southeast of Clinton collected only four-hundredths of an inch in May.

Rain that fell on Thursday helped a few places, such as Prairie County.

Up to an inch of rain fell in parts of the county, and agriculture officials say that will help growers. Many farmers have harvested their winter wheat and are trying to get soybeans in behind it. Also, some rice farmers are ready to flood their fields and what rain did fall Thursday was welcome.
