North Little Rock School District to Lay-off teachers & Close Schools

Posted: Updated:

One Arkansas school district is slashing jobs and demolishing facilities.  North Little Rock School District Administrators say they need to cut jobs and focus their priorities because of tough economic times and shrinking enrollment.

The district will lay-off 25 teachers before the start of the next school year and close eight of their 21 campuses in the next five years.

"We were down about 200 students in our enrollment," says District Spokeswoman Shara Brazear.  "Typically every year we go through and re-evaluate programs and then we look at where we do need to make cuts."

Two schools, Belwood Elementary and Argenta Academy will shut their doors before the fall.  The school closures are part of the district's long range financial plan to improve the district and NLRSD will construct new schools and renovate existing structures over the next five years.

We're told most of the teachers that will lose their jobs are first or second year educators.  9 of them work in elementary schools, the other 16 teach at the high school level.
