The offensive struggles for the Tulsa Drillers continued Monday night in Northwest Arkansas. Tulsa produced only two runs and seven hits in a 6-2 loss to the Naturals.
It was the third straight defeat for the Drillers, a season high. The result also guaranteed that the Naturals will win the four-game series at Arvest Ballpark, the first time this season that Tulsa has lost a series.
In the three losses in Northwest Arkansas, the Drillers have scored a total of only 6 runs while collecting only 18 hits.
Tulsa actually scored first in Monday's loss as Jeff Rutledge led off the game with a double down the left field line. After a balk, Rutledge came home with the game's first run when Nolan Arenado singled into center.
The lead would only hold until the bottom of the second when the Northwest Arkansas scored three times on starter Joe Gardner. The inning began with three straight singles that loaded the bases. A pair of infield grounders plated two runs before a sacrifice bunt by Christian Colon capped the three-run inning.
The Naturals hit for the cycle when they plated three more runs in the fifth. With one out, Wil Myers connected for his 10th home run of the year to make it 4-1.
After the homer, Johnny Whittleman doubled and Mario Lisson tripled for another run. The cycle was completed when Rey Navarro singled with two outs, scoring Lisson to increase the lead to 6-1.
The Drillers added another run in the top of the seventh as Tim Torres led off with a double and eventually scored on a RBI grounder from Warren Schaeffer.
Gardner was tagged for the loss, dropping his record to 1-1. He worked five innings, surrendering the six runs on nine hits.
Josh Outman continued his major league rehab stint from the Colorado Rockies with a scoreless sixth inning. Outman allowed two hits and recorded two strikeouts.
Joey Williamson and Coty Woods each worked a scoreless relief inning. The outing increased Woods scoreless streak to 14 games, and he is yet to allow run this season.
Mike Mitchell went 2-4 and was the only Tulsa player with more than one hit.
The Drillers will try to salvage the final game of their series with the Naturals Tuesday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00AM with Edwar Cabrera (3-2, 2.87 ERA) pitch ing for Tulsa against Chris Dwyer (1-4, 7.46 ERA) of Northwest Arkansas.
