TULSA, Okla. - Once again led by the hot hitting freshmen, Oral Roberts (12-13) hammered Louisiana Tech 14-4 on Baseball Alumni Day at J.L. Johnson Stadium on Saturday.
Jose Trevino powered ORU with his bat, collecting three doubles and four RBI. Trevino is batting .714 in the series with five hits and five RBI. He now leads the team overall with a .312 batting average.
The other hot hitting freshman, Logan Domenico, has come out of nowhere to give the ORU offense some life. Domenico batted 1-2 with a two-run single in the second inning, giving ORU an early 2-0 lead. He now has five RBI in two games.
Every Golden Eagles starter, along with two pinch hitters, recorded a hit for ORU. The Golden Eagles collected five doubles, 18 total hits, and feasted off four fielding errors committed by Louisiana Tech in their biggest offensive output of the season.
Alex Gonzalez (3-1) pitched seven innings in his second straight start, allowing four hits and one run while striking out 10. Gonzalez lowered his ERA to 1.38 on the season.
Two freshman pitchers made their ORU debuts in relief of Gonzalez. Phillip Wilson pitched a scoreless eighth inning, giving up just one hit, and Nathan Garza pitched the ninth. Garza allowed five hits and three runs, but struck out the final two batters to end the game.
Louisiana Tech (13-14) managed to score three runs in the ninth inning, but had just five hits in the previous eight innings.
Phil Maton (5-2) threw five innings, allowing three runs with three strikeouts for the Bulldogs. He was relieved by Sam Alvis, who gave up six runs (one earned) off five hits in the sixth.
ORU scored 11 runs in the sixth and seventh innings to push their lead to 14-1 and seal the win.
The series will conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m.
