How safe are cosmetics?

The average American woman puts twelve cosmetic products on her body each day. Beauty products put us in contact with more than 100 chemicals daily, and many of them have not been thoroughly tested.

One product getting a lot of attention recently, is lipstick. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration found that 400 popular lipsticks contained trace amounts of lead. The cosmetics industry says it's well below the set safety limits, but there have been NO studies done on the effect these chemicals have on our bodies over time.

Another concern among some doctors, is mineral makeup. It's a huge trend right now and is billed as more natural than traditional makeup, but some believe the long-term use and inhalation of minerals could lead to lung problems.

Hear what a local dermatologist says about all this today on Live At 5... Plus, how allergies could play a role in what makeup you're able to wear.
