Ashdown students take on wild hogs as project

ASHDOWN -

Students at Ashdown High School have been studying the spread of feral hogs in southwest Arkansas, and the effort includes making a documentary film about the effect of the beasts on forests and farmland.

This spring, the school is to present the film to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. As part of their project, students filmed wildlife officers studying the hogs.

The Texarkana Gazette reports the project will generate a statewide map and a documentary on invasive species of plants and animals.

The Ashdown students are researching the invasion of alligator weed, musk thistle and American lotus.

Teacher Nancy Stuart says the goal of the project is to help eradicate invasive species that are damaging wild lands and farms.
